چکیده مقاله:

Background: Distracted walking is a major cause of pedestrian fatalities. Along with the expansion and popularity of mobile phones, their impacts on pedestrian safety, especially when crossing urban intersections have attracted a lot of attention. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of mobile-phone use on pedestrians’ crossing behavior when passing signalized intersections. Materials and Methods: An observational study was conducted to compare the behavior of pedestrians using mobile phones (the reference group) with non-mobile phone pedestrians (the time-matched control group and the demographic-matched control group) crossing signalized intersections in 2017. For this purpose, the demographic information and walking behaviors of 513 pedestrians were observed. Furthermore, a binary logistic regression model was used to predict risky behaviors. Results: Using mobile phones has a direct impact on the unsafe behavior of pedestrians crossing signalized intersections. Mobile-phone users showed significantly less safe behavior (14.6 times) than non-mobile phone users (p <0.001). Using mobile phones to talk had the greatest impact on the vulnerable behavior of pedestrians (p <0.001). SMS conversations and listening to music were in the next positions, respectively (p = 0.283). Conclusions: Using mobile phones can often lead to the carelessness of pedestrians and their exposure to the possible risk of pedestrian-vehicle crashes. Applying the findings of the present research requires effective technologies and strategies to prevent the use of mobile phones by pedestrians at signalized intersections.

Pedestrian Delay at Signalized Intersections with a Two-Stage Crossing Design

usually staggered to separate the two crossings as shown in Figure 2. Staggered crossings are designed to force pedestrians to face the upcoming traffic and to avoid the confusion that pedestrians may see the further pedestrian signal indication when they are supposed to follow the first-stage signal. Staggered crossings are implemented widely in the United Kingdom and Japan and are recommended...

Video-Based Monitoring of Pedestrian Movements at Signalized Intersections

Pedestrian and cyclist crossing characteristics are important for the design of urban intersections and signalized crossings. Parameters, such as waiting time, crossing time, and arrival rate are key variables for describing pedestrian characteristics and improving crossing design and signal timing plan. Manually collecting such data is often extremely labor intensive. Therefore, we introduce a...

Estimating Pedestrian Volumes and Crashes at Urban Signalized Intersections

Crash prediction models are used to estimate the number of crashes using a set of explanatory variables. The highway safety community has used modeling techniques to predict vehicle-to-vehicle crashes for decades. Specifically, generalized linear models (GLMs) are commonly used because they can model non-linear count data such as motor vehicle crashes. Regression models such as the Poisson, Zer...

Quasi-induced Exposure Method for Pedestrian Safety at Signalized Intersections

To investigate pedestrian exposure when only pedestrian-crash data are available, the quasi-induced exposure method is used to identify the factors that contributed to pedestrian-vehicle crashes in Las Vegas from 2004 to 2008. The results show that overall crash severity, light conditions and weather conditions are potentially risky factors in pedestrian crashes, and the time of day or day of t...

Modern Roundabout Intersections: When To Use Them? A Comparison With Signalized Intersections

Across the nation, traffic growth and congestion continue to outpace growth in highway capacity. A large amount of this congestion occurs at intersections, rather than along the links between intersections, it is of utmost importance that traffic engineers use every available technique for improving intersection performance and safety. This paper examines the benefits of roundabouts as an alter...
